Fishtail and Lace: A Mark Lesley Dress for a Dream Wedding

Our Brides by Solo featured Bride of the Month was married in a beautiful Mark Lesley Bridal gown.  Here our stunning bride Mel tells of her love story with the military man in her life, David, and their blissful wedding…

Newlyweds Mel and David

All our dreams cone true!  Newlyweds Mel and David revel in the moment.

Where did you meet your groom – how did you fall in love?

We actually met at our local night club in Bury St Edmunds, one of my best friends was talking to his friend and they introduced us.  We started dating for a couple months.  Afbou 3-4 months after we started dating David went to Iraq for 6 months as he is in the military.

We weren’t too sure how it would go but I waited for him.  When he came home the rest was history, we have now been together 8 years and he has had many more tours and we are stronger than ever.

How easy – or hard – was it to find your dress?

I always had an image in my mind of what type of dress I wanted to get married in, but when I started trying dresses on I ended up liking the total opposite.  I wanted to feel special!

I am quite minimalist when it comes to clothes but I wanted to surprise people and feel extra special. It actually came down to 2 dresses, one was quite plain and I liked it more for comfort. The other – my dress! – had more detail and was much bigger.  My mum helped me sway to the right one in the end.

My dress was designed by was Mark Lesley.  It was a fishtail design, lace and had sewn on pearls and sequins for detail.  I felt like I needed a little extra to go with it, so added a belt called ‘Rebecca’ that just made it complete.

The Bridal Party

We had quite a large bridal party.  I had six bridesmaids, my chief bridesmaid being my best friend since we were 11 years old.  We are still best friends with now and very close.  My sister and David’s sister were also bridesmaids.  My other bridesmaids were 2 best friends since school and another of my best friends.

David’s best man was his best mate who he joined the RAF with 9 years ago.  His other ushers were his brother, my brother and David’s best friend from school.

We included all parents in our bridal party, my parents and David’s mum and step-dad and dad and step-mum.  Not forgetting the children of the family – flower girls were David’s 6yr old niece and my niece who is 1 and a half years old.  The page boy who carried the rings was my nephew who is 4 yrs old.

The Wedding Venue

David had always wanted to get married in a church, so we married at St Johns Church, Bury St Edmunds.  The reception was held at Blackthorpe Barn in Rougham, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

We chose this venue because it was bit like a blank canvas.  It was just an empty barn which we could decorate and style how we wanted and we loved this idea.  The grounds of the venue are so beautiful, it was hard to resist and not want to get married there, it is a very popular venue and we were very lucky.

How did your wedding dress make you feel on the day?

My wedding dress made me feel so beautiful.  One of my favouite photos of the day pictured David’s reaction seeing me enter the church with my dad.  The last thing I expected was for him to cry but he did, it was the most amazing feeling seeing him down the aisle and react in that way.

Wedding Memories and Moments

I know probably a lot of brides say there wasn’t one part of their day that was the best, I have to agree it was all just so amazing I cant say there was a best part.  However, my parents did hire singing waiters which were a huge surprise and got all the guests up dancing and singing.

What are your plans for the future?

We had been together 8 years previously to marrying but did not live together I lived with my parents and David lived on the RAF base.  So now we are enjoying married life in our new home together.  We do want to plan for a family but at the moment we are just enjoying spending time together.

Finally, how was your Brides by Solo experience?

I cannot thank Brides by Solo enough for making the whole experience as enjoyable as possible.  I thought taking all of the six bridesmaids to the shop in one day would be the most stressful day ever but actually Odette and Sadie helped so much it made the process so much easier and enjoyable.

First Kiss! A long and happy union awaits them!

Sadie was the seamstress and she did an amazing job on my wedding dress, I would recommend Brides by Solo to any other bride who is getting married and needs a wedding dress, or to anyone looking for bridesmaids dresses!

Brides by Solo wishes Mel & David every success for the future!  We loved being part of your love story. Congratulations on your beautiful wedding and good luck from us all!
