Grace Kelly’s timeless wedding dress
If there is anything that proves my favourite saying from Coco Chanel, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same”, it’s Grace Kelly’s wedding dress.
The iconic dress virtually transformed Grace Kelly from Hollywood actress to royal princess. Six decades since her wedding to Prince Rainer III of Monaco, her dress is still very much remembered and hailed as a high point in modern fashion history.
Created by MGM costume designer Helen Rose, Grace Kelly’s gown featured a high V-neckline with an intricate, antique rose point lace bodice and long sleeves, accented with seed pearls. A high, cinched waist gave way to a full-silhouetted ball gown skirt in silk taffeta and tulle. Completing the dramatic look were a diamond tiara, veil and prayer book encrusted in lace and pearls.
Grace Kelly’s dress is so timeless that it has inspired the gowns of famous contemporary brides including Nicole Richie and Ivanka Trump.
Of course, another famous royal wedding dress – that of the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, was also a tribute to the American actress. Recently, designer label Marchesa unveiled a Grace Kelly-inspired bridal collection at New York Bridal Week.
To emulate Grace Kelly’s classic bridal style, you can incorporate the timeless elements of her wedding dress into your own gown. (Minus the pearl-encrusted prayer book, I imagine!)
Long, lacy sleeves are a refreshing and regal design that stands out in a land filled with shoulder-baring or sleeveless wedding dresses. For versatility, a lace jacket can be incorporated into the look, which can be worn during the ceremony and removed for the festivities after.
A high V-neck and a ball gown skirt are other elements you can integrate into your gown. Of course, you can also save a lot of time and trouble by getting hold of Vogue’s pattern 2979, which is a replica of Grace Kelly’s dress.
Classic, regal, ageless. Much like the iconic woman herself.
