New Award Winning Artisan Baker Is Putting The Couture In Cake Design
Delicate wafer-thin ruffles embellished with accents of light amplifying silver; handset pearls stud tiers of airy, tulle-like layers; a flurry of exquisite hand sculpted flowers all individually made in an artisan process that takes no less than 25 hours to craft – this isn’t the style description for the latest ready-to-wear collection from the fashion house of Oscar de la Renta, one of the most celebrated couturiers in the world. These are cakes produced by The Splendid Bakery, a new award winning artisan baker whose edible delights are inspired by the craftsmanship of haute couture and the beauty of flowers.
Although just six months old, The Splendid Bakery is already making its mark in the industry by scooping a Silver Award at this year’s Cake International event. The creation that captured the judges’ eyes was a four tiered cake inspired by the delicate, almost translucent-petal blooms of the hydrangea. Execution involved painstakingly embellishing a grey royal icing ‘canvas’ base using approx. 1,300 white wafer-thin paper shells, with the ‘flowers’ themselves taking an entire day to make and nearly four hours to attach. Edible silver leaf provides 3-dimensional accents to the petals and tiers themselves, and fully embraces the current on-trend metallic look in wedding cake design. Ruffles, flowers, intricate patterns and pearls all form The Splendid Bakery’s signature look that capture the elegance and grace of classic and ‘slow’ design’.
