Avoiding Stress When Choosing a Wedding Dress

dahliaSome brides find choosing their wedding gown to be a stressful, angst promoting experience rather than the joyous, exciting occasion we all expect.  The pressure to find that one perfect gown for that one perfect day can be too much for some brides and all of a sudden the whole bridal shopping experience becomes hell, for all involved.  Follow these top 5 tips to avoid the stress and strain of wedding gown shopping, because this once in a lifetime exciting experience should really be enjoyed.

Book Your Appointments Well In Advance

Very few bridal shops offer the chance to just walk in without a scheduled appointment. Appointments are normally assigned in 1 or 2 hour slots and Friday’s and Saturday’s book up weeks and months in advance depending on the time of the year.  Once you have decided on when and where (home or abroad) you are going to get married, start booking your appointments – it could be a month before you can get booked in on your day of choice.  Don’t forget that it normally takes on average 2-3 appointments to decide on your gowns, so you will need time!5MR163_Yasmina_Main - Copy

You need to be choosing your gown 9 months in advance.

A typical bridal gown has a 6 month lead time from order and very few stores keep gowns in stock.  Once your gown has arrived you will need fittings and final alterations to ensure your gown is perfectly tailored to you and that the length is perfect for your now chosen heels. 9 months is the minimum you should leave from making a decision to your wedding day.

Be Prepared

When you arrive for your appointment be ready to try on gowns. Don’t arrive wearing fake tan as most stores will not permit you to try on gowns and this can be embarrassing and stressful for both sides. Do wear seamless, good fitting underwear or shape wear. Do wear a pair of shoes with a heel similar to that you think you would be comfortable to wear for your big day.  Do arrive on time. Don’t eat a big meal just before arriving for your appointment as you will be full, bloated and uncomfortable. Do get a good night sleep the night before so that you are well rested and fully alert to enjoy the experience.

The best way to maximise your time during an appointment, and to enjoy the process of finding that perfect gown, is to come armed with your ideas.  What is your dream dress idea? Lace or Silk? Princess or Sheath? Vintage or Contemporary? High or Low Neck? Sheer or Covered Back? The more details you can give your bridal assistant the easier it is for her to present you with a selection of magnificent gowns that  will hopefully include your dream wedding gown.  Don’t be afraid to listen to your bridal assistants advise, these ladies are experts in their fields and can normally immediately see the perfect shape, style and colour that would suit you perfectly.

Be Realistic

Don’t expect every gown you try on to fit you perfectly.  Most stores have a selection of sizes across different gowns and will adjust the gown with clamps or corsetry to give you the best possible idea of how the gown will appear in your perfect size.  This is normal.  Don’t feel in any way embarrassed if you are too small or too big for the sample gown you are trying on.  Also, when ordering your gown, don’t drop a number of sizes just because you plan a strict diet and exercise regime in the next 9 months, sometimes your diet or exercise plan doesn’t work out!! It is always easier to take in a gown by 1 or 2 sizes but it can be nearly impossible to let it out by 1 or 2 sizes!

Don’t Bring A Crowd5MC152_Melitta_Back - Copy

Opinions are important and of course you want to share this exciting experience with you closest friends or family.  But as the saying goes, too many cooks spoil the broth! Keep your entourage small and restricted to only those who have to be there, this should include your mother and your bridesmaids but not your aunts, your friends who didn’t make the bridesmaid cut, your work colleague or your in-laws.  Keep it strict!

And finally – CELEBRATE

When you finally find that gown, it is something to celebrate! This is the gown that you will start the first day of the rest of your new married life in. The gown that summarizes you as a woman. So celebrate it! What is more appropriate then a champagne afternoon tea, because if you cant do for an occasion like this then when can you!!!
