In the pre-digital world photos came with negatives. To print an image, you needed to find the original transparent strip. Strangely, even if you looked closely at this reverse image, in which the darkest areas translated to the brightest parts of the photo (and vice versa) it was hard to work out if the actual photo it produced would be good or not. To get an accurate assessment, the negative had to be developed. You're trying to make sense of a situation that feels the wrong way round. Today brings a development that brings clarity.
